Clear the home yourself or have it done? The decision guide

With family and a trailer you get a long way — until the job outgrows the weekend. When each route makes sense.

Clearing a home yourself works fine when three things hold: the contents are limited, there is no tight handover date and there are enough hands plus a trailer or van. Charity shops often collect usable furniture for free, and the recycling centre takes the rest sorted. Just count honestly: a full home means many trips, carrying on stairs and evenings of sorting — the job is almost always bigger than it looks.

Outsourcing becomes wise as soon as one of those three conditions falls away. With a handover date approaching, speed is the argument: a complete clearance is done in one or two working days, including disposal and broom-clean handover. With an estate it is often also the emotionally gentler path: you decide what is kept, the company does the heavy and impersonal part.

There is a middle road too: make the choices yourself and outsource the lifting. Whoever sorts the sentimental items and paperwork personally and then has only the remaining contents removed (from around € 150) keeps a grip on what matters and buys off the rest of the job. For the home itself, a standalone broom-clean final visit can be the closing piece.

Compare the routes on the total sum, not on your own hourly rate. The trade band for a complete clearance is € 25 to € 45 per m³ (usually € 500 to € 2,500 per home) — set your own estimate against the price index and, in doubt, simply request both quotes: one for the complete job and one for removal only. Then you decide on numbers.
